On the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29, the Diocese of Sorsogon celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with a eucharistic celebration and the opening of the second Diocesan Synod.
Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Charles John Brown, graced the event as main presider and preacher.
Speaking to his fellow Bishops, the clergy and lay faithful of the Diocese gathered at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Brown spoke of journeying together towards the Kingdom of God. He highlighted the meaning of synod: a caravan of people traveling together and underscored the importance of the different roles of the people on the caravan.
Themed "Pilgrims of Hope: Journeying towards the Year of Grace", Brown stressed that the journey is made with others, not alone. He also gave the saints as examples, as "sign posts" along the way.
Closing his homily, the Apostolic Nuncio emphasized the importance of passing on the faith to the next generation, sharing his dream of having the Cathedral still "crowded with people of faith" many years into the future.
Bishop Jose Alan Dialogo of Sorsogon spoke of the celebration as a "gathering of hearts full of thanksgiving" to the Lord for His faithfulness and providence through the years.
On the eve of their founding anniversary, through a Gala Night of Gratitude, the Diocese celebrated their benefactors, mission partners, clergy, volunteers, and those whose service to the local Church of Sorsogon was both profound and impactful.
