ABOUT 27,000 residents at risk in flood-prone areas were safely evacuated by the Barangay and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMC and CDRRMC) before and during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan.
Jason Neola, public information officer at the LGU Naga, said the evacuees were rescued from their homes in various low-lying barangays and brought to safer grounds.
He confirmed that by the morning after the typhoon’s passage, the evacuees had started decamping from seven city-managed evacuation centers, as well as from schools, churches, and private facilities that temporarily opened their doors to affected families.
A total of 7,286 families, or 27,420 individuals, were accommodated in evacuation centers across the city.
The decampment began at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10, and evacuees received family food packs an hour later.
According to the Philippine National Police, there were no crime incidents reported inside the evacuation centers. The city also recorded zero casualties during and after the typhoon, which passed approximately 150 kilometers north of Naga City at around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9.
Meanwhile, in Barangay Igualdad, Punong Barangay Angelo Bendiola said the village council will strengthen its “Adopt-a-Family” program, which accredits homeowners with multi-story houses as temporary shelters for at-risk families during typhoons.
Bendiola said around 40 houses in the barangay have already accommodated evacuees under this program as a precautionary measure against flooding.
