The Best in The Filipino

As the May 9, 2022 national and local elections draw near, a deluge of political surveys have begun to abound once again. Some political observers, however, believe that these “surveys” are initiated by candidates themselves with obvious bias for the candidates’ interests. Apparently, either paid by or expecting favors from the candidates, the survey initiators generally are attracted to candidates who are winnable. There are those who likewise opine that many factors affect the result of surveys, such as the timing and circumstances in which these surveys take place. From the standpoint of a true and credible survey, however, voters should rely on their own personal knowledge of the candidate and not allow themselves to be influenced by the tide of popular opinion reflected in these surveys. The candidate’s background, educational attainment, track record and previous performance, and similar personal attributes are most important considerations in the electorate’s choice. It is unfortunate though, that in the Philippines where the two-party system is prevalent like the Nationalista-Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) and the Liberal Party, members of these parties are mandated to vote for the candidates they carry- without any regard for their personal qualifications. As part of partisan politics, exit polls are likewise initiated to indicate the possible winners with the obvious purpose of a bandwagon effect. These are the realities of Philippine politics-but I still believe that most if not all of our electorate shall exercise the better part of the prudence and wisdom in their choice of whom to cast their votes for the interest of our country and people. We continue to hope that the Philippine electorate shall vote for the one who brings out the best in the Filipino.

As Naga City and the entire Province of Camarines Sur are still under Alert Level 3 due to the surge in COVID 19 positive cases, the Octa research group is optimistic that the spread of Omicron and other variants will end within the year, and that we are at the beginning of this end. Hopefully, this research proves right so we can start a better normal way of life.
