As we write this column we look forward with anxiety and baited breath at the election of the 267th Pope who will shepherd and lead the Catholic hierarchy and the whole Christendom. As it is, the Conclave has already opened and the 133 Bishops who will cast the votes have been confined behind closed doors at the Sistine Chapel. The prayers of all the faithful accomany them, for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in their decision.
It has been reported that there are three Filipino cardinals in the conclave: Cardinals Luis Antonio Tagle, Pablo Virgilio David and Jose Advincula. While the lay faithful do not participate directly in the conclave, our voices and concerns can influence the cardinals who vote. This is indeed a historic moment of profound significance, and our collective prayers serve to remind us of the unity of the entire Church. The papacy of Pope Francis has set the tone for the Church’s response to our present-day challenges, and many among us will be looking forward to a new pope who can continue the same style of pastoral leadership.
We are ushering in another chapter both in civic and church governance. And in both spheres, our ability to engage the youth is of vital importance. The Church and the nation both have to adapt to the needs of the younger generation in fostering their faith and love of and service to the country.
