Timeline of the History of the Devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia

In 1710, Fr. Miguel Robles de Covarrubias, a devotee of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, began to construct a chapel in Nueva Caceres dedicated to her, in fulfillment of his promise to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
He also had her statue carved, based on the estampita he always kept of her. The statue was said to be painted admixed with the blood of a dog, whose dead body was thrown in the river. The following day, however, the dog was seen alive and swimming in the river.
Locally, this is attributed as the first miracle of the Virgin of Peñafrancia.
