To Impeach Or Not To Impeach

Whether Vice-President Sara Duterte is found guilty or not, the act of allowing the constitutional process of impeachment to proceed strengthens the country’s democratic processes and demonstrates the advancement of democratic ideals where justice, accountability and the will of the people prevail over political loyalty. It builds the trust and confidence of the Filipino people in governance and reminds all public servants of their constitutional duties and the consequences of violating them. Likewise, it prevents trial by public opinion, and guarantees that decisions are made based on facts and the law,

However, accountability tends to become selective when politicians are blinded by political loyalty: the wrong is only condemned when committed by political opponents. It silences independent thinking and moral objectivity. It prioritizes preserving power and political survival over the country and the public’s welfare. And all these are done while masking political motives as actions that are objective and neutral, or in the public interest- such as shifting the conversation to “bigger priorities”, or attacking the defenders of what is true and ethical as the ones who are political and many other facade of reasons.

It normalizes double standards and sends the message that power can protect one from wrongdoing. To impeach or not to impeach is a question whose answer is self-evident and beyond dispute.
