UNC confers first honorary Doctor of Laws on Justice Midas Marquez

THE University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) conferred its first-ever honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, on Supreme Court Associate Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez during its Academic Convocation 2026 on Tuesday, September 16.

The university recognized Marquez for his distinguished career in law, public service and the administration of justice.

Before the convocation, Marquez faced members of the local press, where questions focused on his years of service in the Supreme Court, his experience as Court Administrator, and his involvement in efforts to modernize the judiciary.

Marquez served as Court Administrator for nearly 12 years before his appointment to the Supreme Court. His work in court administration included initiatives involving judicial modernization and the use of technology in court proceedings.

Marquez’s career in the Supreme Court spans more than three decades, beginning as an apprentice and law clerk before taking on various positions within the institution and eventually becoming an Associate Justice.

The university said the conferment reflects its recognition of excellence, integrity and commitment to public service—values it seeks to uphold and impart to its students and the wider academic community.

The historic conferment was witnessed by members of the UNC community, legal education stakeholders, members of the judiciary and other guests during the academic convocation.
