Uwan leaves P4.4-B damage to agri, infra in Catanduanes

LEGAZPI CITY --- The provincial government of Catanduanes reported on Friday that Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong, which struck on Nov. 9, caused over PHP4.4 billion in damage to agriculture and infrastructure across the province.


In a situation report, Governor Patrick Azanza said that agricultural losses amounted to over PHP1.5 billion, while damage to infrastructure reached PHP2.8 billion.


An additional PHP27 million was reported in damage to non-infrastructure sectors.


Regarding the status of internally displaced persons, 777 families, or 3,024 individuals, are currently staying in various evacuation centers, while 3,450 families, totaling 12,387 individuals, are staying with relatives.


The typhoon impacted road networks extensively, rendering multiple barangays in Baras, Gigmoto, San Miguel, and Viga impassable due to landslides. San Miguel recorded four bridges that were completely destroyed.


The breakdown of infrastructure damage includes over PHP342 million losses in local roads and bridges, and PHP1.47 billion in national roads and bridges. Health facilities suffered PHP700,000 in damage, while other affected sectors, including seawalls and flood control structures, incurred damage worth over PHP503 million.


Government facilities sustained PHP3.34 million in damage, agriculture-related infrastructure lost PHP66.21 million, school facilities losses amounted to PHP378.95 million, and other structures experienced losses of PHP82.62 million.


In total, 33,024 houses were affected, with 28,420 partially damaged and 4,604 destroyed.


The Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center reported that 60,969 families, or 206,538 persons, have been affected across the province.


Meanwhile, communication and power services remain unstable in the 11 towns of the province.


Power supply has been restored in three out of 27 barangays in Bato, while 28 out of 63 barangays in Virac have regained power.


Despite widespread disruptions, ports and airports have resumed operations. San Andres and Virac seaports have been operational since Nov. 11, and Virac Airport has also reopened.


Azanza added that damage assessment efforts are ongoing to ensure that all are accounted for. (PNA)
