An alleged mentally ill woman in Naga City may face an arson charge after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, at Palmera Village, Zone 4, Sitio Salunguigui, Barangay Cararayan.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), through Deputy City Fire Marshal F/INSP Erwin Verzosa, about five houses made of light materials and occupied by the San Jose family were razed by the blaze.
Initial investigation revealed that a certain Kristie, who is reportedly suffering from mental illness, had left a gas stove unattended, triggering the fire. Verzosa said the incident was the result of her negligence.
He added that Kristie immediately fled the area as the flames began to spread within the compound, causing an estimated ₱17,000 worth of damage.
Verzosa, who is also a lawyer, explained that once Kristie’s mental illness is medically proven, she may be acquitted of criminal liability.
As of this writing, Kristie has yet to be located, although reports received by Bicol Mail indicate that she has been seen roaming around Barangay Dayangdang.
