Zaldy Co backs PBBM on 2025 budget delay

By Jason B. Neola

The House Appropriations Committee Chairman, Zaldy Co, affirmed that the House of Representatives fully supports and respects President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to delay the signing of the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA) to allow for a thorough review of its provisions.

“We fully understand and commend President Marcos for his commitment to ensuring that the national budget aligns with the country’s priorities,” Co said. “This approach exemplifies the strength of our democratic processes and highlights the effective system of checks and balances in our government,” he added.

President Marcos is now scheduled to sign the 2025 General Appropriations Bill (GAB) into law on December 30.

Once enacted, the 2025 GAB will be officially known as the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

Marcos was initially expected to sign the proposed ₱6.352-trillion national budget before Christmas but opted to delay its approval for a more extensive review of its provisions. Malacañang received the printed copy of the 2025 GAB late in the afternoon of December 20, Chavez added.

The President has since been holding a series of meetings with Cabinet members to scrutinize the 2025 spending plan. He cited numerous changes made by Congress to the budget as a reason for the delay, emphasizing his desire to ensure the budget addresses “important” and “priority” projects effectively.

Rep. Co echoed the importance of this careful review, noting that the President’s approach underscores his dedication to transparency and accountability. “By meticulously examining the proposed budget, the administration aims to ensure that public funds are allocated efficiently and responsibly,” he said.

The House, Rep. Co stressed, remains ready to work closely with Malacañang throughout the review process. “We stand prepared to collaborate with the President to refine the budget, ensuring it serves the best interests of all Filipinos,” he concluded.
